News Topics

Topics are used to organize your news items into a taxonomy. Topics are displayed on a news item lists above the title of the news item. On an actual news item, the topic is listed to the left of the body just below the title, byline, and date. If a topic list is created, then the topic labels will automatically link to a landing page for that topic that has a corresponding promoted entity queue for managing the top 5 news items under that topic.

Usage

Types of Topics

Topics consist of 2 types:

  • Top-level Topics: Topics that are preset and can only be changed by the Office of Communications. If you would like a new one created, please contact:
  • 2nd level Topics: Sub-topics of top-level topics that you can create and update as desired.

Creating a Topic

To create a topic, follow these instructions:

  1. Using the Drupal Admin bar, go to Structure > Taxonomy > News Topics and click add terms on the right side
  2. Configure the News Topics fields as required:
    1. Name: This is the title of the topic that will be displayed
    2. Summary: This text is not displayed on the page and is only held in the code. Its usage is the same as page summaries, is required for all new topics, and has a 200 character limit.
    3. Body: This is displayed on the page where everyone can see. It provides you a way to add some text to summarize the news items that are displayed in this category. It allows simple styling like bold or italic. You also can also link to things like internal or external URLs.
    4. Parent Term: This is to pick the parent topic that this child topic should be organized under. This is the same relationship as used with menu items.
  3. Once configured, click Save at the bottom right

Once completed, you will now be able to select this topic on any news item.

Applying a Topic

To apply a topic to a news item, follow these instructions:

  1. Edit the news item you want to add a topic to and go to the Body tab
  2. Scroll down and find the 2 fields for setting topics
    1. Primary Topic: The Primary Topic field is for selecting the topic you want displayed on lists.
    2. Topics: Topics is for selecting all the topics that you want your news item to be listed under.
      1. This will be displayed under Topics to the left of the body field on the news item
      2. This will display the associated news item on any landing pages for that topic
  3. Once configured, click Save at the bottom right

Once completed, your news item will have the topic applied and displayed depending on configurations.

Organizing your Topics

To organize your created topics, follow these instructions:

  1. Using the Drupal Admin bar, go to Structure > Taxonomy > News Topics and click list terms on the right side
  2. Once clicked you will see a list of all the available topics for your site. Any topics that can be edited will have the edit link in the Operations column
  3. To change the parent item, or order of the topic, you can use the hamburger icon . to drag and drop the item into the position desired
  4. Once the topics have been placed as desired, find the Save button in the bottom left corner

Once completed, your topics should now appear in the configured organization.
